Le gouverneur sortant, Pappy O\u2019Daniel, figure populiste ob\u00e8se et perp\u00e9tuellement accompagn\u00e9 de son cigare, voit son pouvoir contest\u00e9 par le candidat r\u00e9formateur Homer Stokes. Ce dernier sillonne l\u2019\u00c9tat \u00e0 bord d\u2019un camion et met en sc\u00e8ne, lors de ses meetings locaux, une rh\u00e9torique du \u00ab nettoyage \u00bb, symbolis\u00e9e par un balai, promettant une r\u00e9forme morale et politique. Se pr\u00e9sentant comme le \u00ab servant of the little man \u00bb, Stokes construit son discours en opposition directe \u00e0 O\u2019Daniel, qu\u2019il d\u00e9nonce comme un \u00ab slave of the interests \u00bb, soumis aux puissances \u00e9conomiques.<\/p>\n<p>La trame principale du film repose sur l\u2019\u00e9vasion de trois condamn\u00e9s aux travaux forc\u00e9s. Ulysses Everett McGill a \u00e9t\u00e9 incarc\u00e9r\u00e9 pour avoir exerc\u00e9 le droit sans licence. Il convainc ses cod\u00e9tenus, Pete et Delmar, de s\u2019\u00e9vader en leur faisant miroiter l\u2019existence d\u2019un tr\u00e9sor qu\u2019il aurait enterr\u00e9. Ce pr\u00e9texte se r\u00e9v\u00e8le progressivement mensonger : l\u2019objectif r\u00e9el d\u2019Everett est de sauver son mariage. Toutefois, encha\u00een\u00e9 \u00e0 ses compagnons, il ne peut mener son projet sans eux.<\/p>\n<p>Au fil de leur odyss\u00e9e, le r\u00e9cit croise \u00e0 plusieurs reprises la campagne \u00e9lectorale qui traverse le Mississippi. Dans un studio de radio, le trio enregistre, accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019un guitariste affirmant avoir vendu son \u00e2me au diable, la chanson \u00ab Man of Constant Sorrow \u00bb, laquelle devient un succ\u00e8s populaire \u00e0 leur insu. Sous le nom des Soggy Bottom Boys, ils rencontrent bri\u00e8vement le gouverneur sortant Pappy O\u2019Daniel et son \u00e9quipe de campagne \u00e0 l\u2019issue de l\u2019enregistrement. O\u2019Daniel per\u00e7oit imm\u00e9diatement la puissance du nouveau m\u00e9dia radiophonique et exploite cette visibilit\u00e9 en diffusant ses discours en direct, associ\u00e9s \u00e0 de la \u00ab good old-timey music \u00bb. L\u2019\u00e9mission, intitul\u00e9e \u00ab Pass the Biscuits, Pappy O\u2019Daniel Flour Hour \u00bb, m\u00eale propagande politique et placement de produit pour la marque de farine du gouverneur, ancien homme d\u2019affaires.<\/p>\n<p>Les fugitifs croisent \u00e9galement le candidat r\u00e9formateur Homer Stokes. Ils l\u2019aper\u00e7oivent d\u2019abord lors d\u2019un meeting sur la place du march\u00e9 d\u2019une petite ville, puis le rencontrent indirectement \u00e0 travers le Ku Klux Klan, qui a captur\u00e9 leur guitariste et s\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 le lyncher. En tentant de le sauver, les trois hommes provoquent l\u2019effondrement d\u2019une croix en feu et parviennent \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9chapper. Stokes se r\u00e9v\u00e8le alors \u00eatre le chef du clan, dissimul\u00e9 sous la cagoule.<\/p>\n<p>La sc\u00e8ne politiquement d\u00e9cisive du film se d\u00e9roule lors d\u2019un banquet de collecte de fonds organis\u00e9 par Stokes. S\u2019y croisent O\u2019Daniel \u2014 qui cherche \u00e0 convaincre le directeur de campagne de son rival de faire d\u00e9fection \u2014, l\u2019ex-femme d\u2019Everett, ainsi que les trois fugitifs. Mont\u00e9s sur sc\u00e8ne, les Soggy Bottom Boys interpr\u00e8tent leur chanson, d\u00e9clenchant l\u2019enthousiasme imm\u00e9diat du public. Stokes les reconna\u00eet et interrompt la performance, les d\u00e9non\u00e7ant comme \u00ab miscegenated \u00bb, \u00ab miscreants \u00bb et \u00ab not white \u00bb. Il accuse \u00e9galement le groupe d\u2019avoir r\u00e9cemment emp\u00each\u00e9 un lynchage et profan\u00e9 une croix en feu. La foule se retourne alors contre lui et le chasse de la salle.<\/p>\n<p>Profitant de ce retournement, O\u2019Daniel saisit l\u2019occasion \u2014 \u00ab Goddamn! Opportunity knocks \u00bb \u2014, monte sur sc\u00e8ne, se range du c\u00f4t\u00e9 des Soggy Bottom Boys et leur accorde sa gr\u00e2ce en tant que gouverneur.<\/p>\n<p>Le film ne pr\u00e9cise pas explicitement l\u2019issue de l\u2019\u00e9lection. Les s\u00e9quences politiques restent imbriqu\u00e9es dans de multiples intrigues secondaires et le r\u00e9cit se poursuit, apr\u00e8s le banquet, avec la qu\u00eate de l\u2019alliance engloutie dans un lac artificiel en formation. Toutefois, la retransmission radiophonique de l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement laisse entendre que l\u2019opinion publique se fa\u00e7onne \u00e0 l\u2019image de la r\u00e9action de la salle, sugg\u00e9rant que Stokes s\u2019est lui-m\u00eame priv\u00e9 de toute chance d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e9lu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A voir pour <\/strong><br \/>\nTissu d\u2019histoires absurdes tel que seuls les fr\u00e8res Coen savent en tisser, le film se d\u00e9ploie dans un clapotis d\u00e9cal\u00e9 de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de la litt\u00e9rature et du cin\u00e9ma, d\u2019Hom\u00e8re au Magicien d\u2019Oz. Derri\u00e8re l\u2019exag\u00e9ration burlesque se dessinent pourtant des lignes de force \u00e9tonnamment plausibles du point de vue de la strat\u00e9gie politique : l\u2019identification culturelle peut peser davantage sur le choix \u00e9lectoral que l\u2019\u00e9valuation des performances politico-\u00e9conomiques, tandis que l\u2019\u00e9mergence d\u2019un nouveau m\u00e9dia \u00e9lectronique est capable de transformer en profondeur les modes de communication politique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La strat\u00e9gie gagnante <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pappy O\u2019Daniel fonde sa strat\u00e9gie de communication sur sa propre \u00e9mission de radio, con\u00e7ue \u00e0 la fois comme canal de diffusion et comme vecteur d\u2019une aura de convivialit\u00e9, nourrie par l\u2019amour de la musique traditionnelle. Au d\u00e9but du film, cette strat\u00e9gie semble vou\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chec : sa politique demeure impuissante face \u00e0 la Grande D\u00e9pression, et les attaques de ses adversaires \u2014 qui l\u2019accusent de servir des int\u00e9r\u00eats particuliers \u2014 paraissent l\u2019atteindre sans toutefois mobiliser l\u2019\u00e9lectorat en sa faveur.<\/p>\n<p>Le rapport de force s\u2019inverse lorsque son rival s\u2019en prend \u00e0 un groupe interpr\u00e9tant une chanson populaire \u00e0 laquelle le public s\u2019identifie culturellement. O\u2019Daniel saisit alors l\u2019occasion et adopte le ton juste. En d\u00e9non\u00e7ant son adversaire comme \u00ab the only man in our great state who ain\u2019t a music lover \u00bb, il transforme un conflit politique en affrontement symbolique autour des valeurs culturelles partag\u00e9es. Cette strat\u00e9gie lui permet de rallier la foule, non par un programme ou un bilan \u00e9conomique, mais par l\u2019affirmation d\u2019une proximit\u00e9 culturelle et d\u2019une image de dirigeant accessible.<\/p>\n<p><b>La strat\u00e9gie perdante<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Homer Stokes m\u00e8ne une campagne d\u00e9centralis\u00e9e et apparemment engag\u00e9e, mais il perd son sang-froid lors du meeting perturb\u00e9 par l\u2019intervention du Ku Klux Klan. Il s\u2019y d\u00e9voile comme un raciste virulent et \u2014 ce qui semble au moins aussi r\u00e9dhibitoire aux yeux du public pr\u00e9sent \u2014 comme celui qui interrompt la performance des Soggy Bottom Boys. Il se place ainsi du mauvais c\u00f4t\u00e9 du champ culturel, \u00e0 tous les niveaux. La retransmission en direct de la sc\u00e8ne \u00e0 la radio amplifie encore cet \u00e9chec : face \u00e0 un tel moment de rupture symbolique, une multitude d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements locaux ult\u00e9rieurs ne saurait compenser l\u2019impact de ce point bas d\u00e9cisif dans la campagne de Stokes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment la politique est-elle pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e ? <\/strong><br \/>\nDans des paysages de r\u00e9gions peu peupl\u00e9es, la campagne \u00e9lectorale se d\u00e9ploie \u00e0 la fois dans l\u2019espace public \u2014 rues et salles des petites villes \u2014 et sur les ondes radiophoniques. Conform\u00e9ment au contexte d\u2019un \u00c9tat du Sud des \u00c9tats-Unis, la rh\u00e9torique adopt\u00e9e est r\u00e9solument populiste : l\u2019\u00e9lection se joue comme une comp\u00e9tition pour s\u2019attirer les faveurs du \u00ab little man \u00bb. L\u2019un des candidats se pr\u00e9sente comme son serviteur et le d\u00e9fenseur de ses int\u00e9r\u00eats \u00e9conomiques, tandis que l\u2019autre cherche \u00e0 capitaliser sur une image de proximit\u00e9 et de convivialit\u00e9. Cette mise en sc\u00e8ne politique s\u2019adresse exclusivement \u00e0 un \u00e9lectorat blanc, tant dans les discours que dans la composition du public des meetings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citation<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00ab\u00a0We ain&rsquo;t one-at-a-timin&rsquo;
