On y d\u00e9couvre le jeune avocat Mohandas K. Gandhi, qui s\u2019oppose aux lois et pratiques racistes. Il \u00e9labore alors le concept de resistance non-violente et devient un h\u00e9ros pour la communaut\u00e9 indienne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"394\" data-end=\"681\">En 1915, il retourne en Inde et prend la t\u00eate du mouvement pour l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance. Il convainc ses compagnons de lutte d\u2019opter pour la non-violence et organise une gr\u00e8ve g\u00e9n\u00e9rale sous le nom de \u00ab\u202fa day of prayer and fasting\u202f\u00bb, mettant en lumi\u00e8re la fragilit\u00e9 de la domination britannique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"683\" data-end=\"1254\">Sous la devise \u00ab\u202fit is not only generals who know how to plan campaigns\u202f\u00bb, Gandhi orchestre une s\u00e9rie d\u2019actions de r\u00e9sistance, notamment la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Marche du sel, qui aboutissent \u00e0 des victoires partielles. Pourtant, le mouvement ind\u00e9pendantiste subit des revers pendant un quart de si\u00e8cle : arrestations de Gandhi et de ses partisans, violences de l\u2019Empire britannique contre la population indienne, mais aussi, par moments, actes violents de la part de certains r\u00e9sistants contre les repr\u00e9sentants du pouvoir colonial, ce qui pousse Gandhi \u00e0 s\u2019arr\u00eater pour r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1999\">L\u2019objectif de Gandhi n\u2019est pas seulement l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance rapide, mais sa mise en place sous plusieurs conditions\u202f: emp\u00eacher qu\u2019une \u00e9lite indienne ne prenne simplement la place des Britanniques, am\u00e9liorer la condition des intouchables et des femmes, et assurer une s\u00e9paration pacifique avec l\u2019Empire britannique. Il r\u00eave d\u2019une Inde ind\u00e9pendante o\u00f9 hindous, musulmans, sikhs et autres communaut\u00e9s religieuses vivraient ensemble en paix. Mais malgr\u00e9 son engagement total, y compris plusieurs gr\u00e8ves de la faim, l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance d\u00e9bouche sur la partition du pays en deux \u00c9tats, avec son lot d\u2019exil forc\u00e9 et de massacres, ce qu\u2019il consid\u00e8re comme un immense \u00e9chec. Le conflit interreligieux entra\u00eene finalement son assassinat par un extr\u00e9miste hindou.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2001\" data-end=\"2018\"><strong>\u00c0 voir car<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2309\">Il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un biopic \u00e0 la fois \u00e9mouvant et visuellement grandiose sur une figure historique majeure. Le film offre une le\u00e7on d\u00e9taill\u00e9e sur la strat\u00e9gie de r\u00e9sistance non-violente \u2013 bien que la perspective du film reste britannique et que la psychologie de Gandhi soit sans doute plus complexe qu&rsquo;illustr\u00e9e dans le film.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2311\" data-end=\"2342\"><strong>La strat\u00e9gie victorieuse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"3132\">Gandhi concentre son combat non-violent sur des lois qui heurtent la justice, comme les r\u00e8glements racistes sur le mariage et les passeports en Afrique du Sud, ou encore le monopole royal sur le sel en Inde. Il les enfreint publiquement, offrant \u00e0 ses partisans une exp\u00e9rience d\u2019\u00ab\u202f\u00e9mancipation\u202f\u00bb et mettant les autorit\u00e9s devant des choix difficiles\u202f: soit elles r\u00e9priment avec violence, ce qui appara\u00eet comme injuste aux yeux de l\u2019opinion publique britannique et nourrit le doute sur la l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9 de l\u2019Empire, soit elles c\u00e8dent et reconnaissent une d\u00e9faite morale et politique, affaiblissant ainsi leur autorit\u00e9 pour le prochain combat, que la r\u00e9sistance pacifique ne manquera pas de mener. Comme le dit Gandhi\u202f: \u00ab\u202fThrough our pain we will make them see their injustice.\u202f\u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3134\" data-end=\"3697\">La plus grande difficult\u00e9 pour Gandhi n\u2019est pas d\u2019appliquer sa strat\u00e9gie, mais de convaincre ses propres partisans de l\u2019adopter. Il r\u00e9agit vivement lorsqu\u2019elle est qualifi\u00e9e de \u00ab\u202fr\u00e9sistance passive\u202f\u00bb (\u00ab\u202fI, for one, have never advocated passive anything.\u202f\u00bb). Cette m\u00e9thode implique des souffrances, mais permet aux opprim\u00e9s de prendre l\u2019initiative\u202f: \u00ab\u202fThe function of a civil resister is to provoke response. And we will continue to provoke until they respond, or they change the law. They are not in control \u2013 we are. That is the strength of civil resistance.\u202f\u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3699\" data-end=\"4407\">Le film illustre bien les conditions qui ont permis cette strat\u00e9gie en Inde au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle\u202f: un appel \u00e0 l\u2019humanit\u00e9 et \u00e0 la justice adress\u00e9 \u00e0 une puissance coloniale \u00e9loign\u00e9e, o\u00f9 le scepticisme envers l\u2019Empire grandissait d\u00e9j\u00e0. Les repr\u00e9sentants britanniques sur place \u00e9taient souvent ouverts aux compromis, et le syst\u00e8me judiciaire colonial lui-m\u00eame doutait des lois qu\u2019il devait faire appliquer. Les m\u00e9dias anglais et am\u00e9ricains ont \u00e9galement jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le crucial, incarn\u00e9s dans le film par un journaliste du New York Times qui suit Gandhi tout au long de son combat. Une br\u00e8ve discussion sur l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 de la non-violence contre Hitler ne re\u00e7oit d\u2019ailleurs pas de r\u00e9ponse positive dans le film.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4409\" data-end=\"4439\"><strong>La strat\u00e9gie inefficace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4441\" data-end=\"4751\">Ni la r\u00e9pression brutale par l\u2019arm\u00e9e et la police, ni le recours \u00e0 la justice ne permettent aux Britanniques d\u2019\u00e9craser le mouvement pour l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance. Les tentatives de pousser les militants \u00e0 la violence ou de minimiser leurs actions (\u00ab\u202fIt\u2019s only symbolic if we choose to make it so\u202f\u00bb) \u00e9chouent \u00e9galement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4753\" data-end=\"4802\"><strong>Comment la politique est-elle repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e\u202f?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4804\" data-end=\"5263\">\u00ab\u202fMr. Gandhi is a shrewder man than you will ever meet, however otherworldly he may seem.\u202f\u00bb Telle est la conclusion du Premier ministre sud-africain, le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral Smuts, lorsqu\u2019il capitule et lib\u00e8re un Gandhi affaibli et v\u00eatu d\u2019une tenue de prisonnier, tout en abolissant une loi raciste. Comme les autres dirigeants britanniques, il comprend la finesse de la strat\u00e9gie gandhienne, mais se trouve impuissant face \u00e0 la puissance morale de la r\u00e9sistance civile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5265\" data-end=\"5530\">Ce qui est \u00e9labor\u00e9 dans l\u2019ashram \u2013 parfois m\u00eame en prison \u2013, planifi\u00e9 dans les salons de l\u2019\u00e9lite indienne et organis\u00e9 lors des r\u00e9unions du parti finit par s\u2019imposer, lentement mais s\u00fbrement, aux centres de pouvoir suppos\u00e9s de Pretoria et Delhi.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5532\" data-end=\"5544\"><strong>Th\u00e9matiques<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5546\" data-end=\"5613\">Ind\u00e9pendance, d\u00e9colonisation, imp\u00e9rialisme, racisme, \u00e9mancipation<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5615\" data-end=\"5629\"><strong>La citation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5631\" data-end=\"5943\">\u00ab\u202fIn the end you will walk out. Because one hundred thousand Englishmen simply cannot control three hundred fifty million Indians if the Indians refuse to co-operate. And that is what we intend to achieve \u2013 peaceful, non-violent, non-co-operation.
